A Proper Golf Swing Requires Practice And Concentration

by Perry Rightmond

Most golf pros agree that there is no such thing as the perfect golf swing. Different people have different physiques, musculature, height and weight; they couldn't all swing a club precisely the same way and get a good result. But there is such a thing as a proper golf swing.

Watch professional golfers on television, and you'll notice that amongst all the differences, you will see a core of similarities. They have all start out with a mastery of the basics-their golf grip, their aim, and their setup. They also can repeat their swing over and over again, just the same way. These are the keys to a proper golf swing.

There are three basic parts to the swing: the backswing, the downswing, and the finish. These must be integrated into a smooth, continuous motion that is neither too fast nor too slow, and creates a rhythm that can be replicated over and over, countless times.

The arms should control the backswing, rather than the hands. Don't pick up the club with your hands, but rather draw it back with a single combined motion of both arms and hands. Moving through the backswing your shoulder and hips with naturally twist in a weight transfer motion, which should be comfortable and easy. At the waist your hands should start to set, and be fully set by the top, and not broken. Be careful not to overswing.

Your focus should be on controlling your maximum speed on the downswing. This means you need to take your time during the backswing and get set up properly. Then as you start the downswing, concentrate on pulling with your left arm. This should help your body work as an entire, single unit which will result in improved consistency.

You cannot have a proper golf swing unless it finishes properly, no matter how good your backswing and downswing are. You need to keep the club's face square for several inches after it makes contact with the ball. You then need to finish high so that you get sufficient air under the ball. Also, you need to make sure that your weight is balanced at the end of your swing.

And those are the basics. Now, get out there and practice. Make sure that you have good equipment; poorly balanced clubs or ones that are too rigid or flexible for you will make it difficult to achieve consistency. Try a brand like callaway golf clubs, or a similar high-quality company. Consistency and coordination, with the right equipment, and you'll succeed.
