Swimming Pools 101

There are a lot of people who would love to own a swimming pool, but they do not know where to even begin the process of getting one. If you have never owned a pool or had one on your property, the idea of getting a swimming pool can be intimidating. If you take things one step at a time, it can be much less of a hassle.

Your most basic decision will be whether you are interested in an in-ground pool or one that rests above ground. This decision will make a big difference in a lot of ways. It will definitely lead to different paths.

A popular choice for those who do not want to spend a ton of money is the above ground pool. As the name implies, these sit on top of the ground. They can usually be purchased brand new for a couple of thousand dollars.

If you are looking to increase your property value, an in-ground pool might be a good idea. Be warned though that they are much more expensive in most case than above ground pools. The costs can get very high.

Before making any decision regarding a pool, you must assess your property. You need to take the size of your yard into account. The swimming pool you choose should not completely fill the area.

The actual installation of a pool can be a major project. If you have helpers who know what they are doing, you can sometimes get an above ground pool set up on your own. An in-ground pool will require professional installation.

Both types of pools will need to have electricity run to them to run their filtering systems. This can be an additional expense of several hundred or thousands of dollars. Do not try to take shortcuts on this part of the project, as it could be quite dangerous to do so.

You may also need to have some excavation done to ensure your property is ready for your pool. This is another area where having qualified friends can help defer costs. Once again, if you do not know what you are doing, hire a professional.
